Now that I have a plethora of downtime I have immersed myself in the bowels of
horrid podcasts found within the depths of the internet. To my surprise, I found one
notable podcast just worthy of mention.

The Best Damn Nerd Show, commonly referred to as “The BDNS” or “The League of
Really Gay Friends”, consists of a motley crew of humorous, self-deprecating,
narcissists. Despite their aimless chatter, lack of original content, poor
production value, gratuitous homosexual overtones, and overall inept knowledge of
subject matter, “The BDNS” somehow provide an entertaining experience.

The show is hosted by James Kincaid. James is an able host who tries his best to
retain some sense of professionalism amid the chaotic maelstrom of circle jerks.
Unfortunately, James possesses a number of critical flaws which impede his ability
to host the podcast. For starters, he is known for his inability to use both a
keyboard and mouse while playing PC games and he’s also a well documented button
smasher. It’s evident that James is a newb and has no business discussing any video
game outside of “Hello Kitty Adventure Island”. Additionally, James revealed his
ignorance in an earlier podcast when he failed to differentiate Marvel Girl and Ms.
Marvel. It’s obvious this host doesn’t care much for lore.

Then we have another host named Jeff Budd. If James is the heart of “The BDNS”, then
Jeff is the anus. If the subject matter doesn’t pertain to Cyclops, Jamie Lannister,
H.P. Lovecraft, Magic The Gathering, or the video game “Ocarina of Time”, Jeff will
thoroughly defecate on it. I am genuinely impressed by his ability to tenaciously
sling copious amounts of verbal feces in a unique and witty fashion every week.

Chris Davis is a constant host on the podcast as well. I really don’t know much
about him. He’s rarely cognizant of his surroundings. I’m not sure if he realizes he
is part of a weekly podcast. Despite his lack of focus, I’m very fond of Chris as a
person. His tribute to my departure was extremely moving and for a brief moment in
time, he captured the hearts and sentiments of millions.

There’s also this new host, Mark the comic book guy. He is by far the only tangible
expert on the show. However, his contributions to the show remain minimal at best
due to his time as a P.O.W. locked up in a sensory deprivation chamber. As a result,
he is constantly raving over anything that remotely consists of bright colors,
contrasting shapes, or contains dialogue in any type of language; real or fictional.

The show used to have another host named Jonathon Craig. I have been informed that
he is currently on a leave of absence after he was sexually assaulted by a number of
his co-hosts.

One of the few bright spots about this podcast was the inclusion of some sort of
half-Japanese cyborg. The cyborg sounded very similar to the iconic Optimus Prime
after a few cartons of unfiltered Pall Malls. Since the unknown departure of the
cyborg, the show contains even less sound effects and musical themes than in the
past.

However, Tim Childs is a perfect example of addition by subtraction. The podcast
took a major leap forward when they banned this former host due to his dyslexic
Brooklyn accent.

Overall, “The League of Really Gay Friends” seems like just another run of the mill
podcast. The show could be vastly improved if they curbed their obsession with
adolescent teen dramas like Gossip Girls, The Arrow, and anything else from the CW.
They should also stop trying to steal original ideas from other successful shows;
specially regarding fanfic battles between iconic characters found amongst various
genres of entertainment.

Despite all the flaws, they pull out a memorable experience each week. The BDNS is
living proof that you can make an edible meal out of toxic ingredients. I give the
show 3 stars!

You lose your hat back there? Heard a kid lost his head trying to show off on that roller coaster of a movie that was Iron man 3. After perusing a ton of other reviews for this movie I can definitely say I’m stoked at the reaction it’s getting; good and bad. How’s that saying go? Bad press is good press. Yep that’s it. I love controversy (yep that Prince song too) and this flick delivers that on all levels. The following will have spoilers and I highly suggest you wait to read this article until you watch it. That said, strap up boys and girls and let’s kick this pig.

Where to start other than the beginning. I mean besides the fact that the main villain ISN’T THE GOD DAMN MANDARIN. Now that I’ve stood on a chair and yelled that it’s time for all of us to take a deep breathe and take this movie for what it is; a damn good comic book action comedy romp. BOOM! See what I did there, I led you one way thinking I hated this movie, but actually I decided not to be a crazy fan boy and take a step back and look at this movie as a whole. A lot like what a lot of people are upset about; the marketing and ‘lies’ they fed us.

Notice anything wrong here? Nope cause he’s not actually The Mandarin.

A ton of money and time went into marketing this movie and keeping the main villain a secret. Bravo on all accounts keeping all of this hush hush for so long, especially in the world we live in today. Take a look though at what they did here. They completely matched their marketing tactics with their story line. Misdirection everywhere. I know a lot of you wanted The Mandarin (as did I), but I would have been pretty pissed if that’s all we were getting of The Mandarin through the first portion of the movie. The fact that it turns out he was an actor (love you Trevor!) they were then able to focus more on the Extremis story line. A Story line that demands the full length movie that it got, no matter how bad Dr. Maya Hansen’s character was (will be mentioned later as well). The Mandarin is great, but I’m actually very glad still it wasn’t Ben Kingsley (hated his god damn voice) and that I’m sure we’ll get The Mandarin at some point. I mean look at it this way…who funded AIM to begin with? I think there’s much of this story yet to be told. Someone even mentioned that maybe Kingsley even was acting that he was an actor.                                                                                    I highly doubt it, but if so someone call M. Night.

Speaking of directors I’m hearing a lot of flack being thrown towards the tone of this movie director by Shane Black. The same director of the first two Lethal Weapons and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (a personal favorite of mine). If you couldn’t tell the tone of this movie by the opening title’s song (Eiffel 65′s ‘I’m Blue’) then I think you’re on your own. There was a lot of comedy in this movie and a lot of ‘buddy cop’ moments between Cheadle and RDJ, but I think it really worked in this movie especially since they went away from The Mandarin. If you’re doing a Mandarin film it’s probably going to have to be pretty dark and Shane Black went to his wheelhouse and stayed away from that and I applaud him for not forcing something he wasn’t comfortable with.

The last main talking point to this movie is simply that it is the first Marvel movie after The Avengers. Phase 2 for the Marvel movies is now starting and people are wondering did IM3 take it in the right direction. I can tell you I think it did. How are we supposed to accept these heroes are just fighting on their own now? Well as it was stated by Cheadle in the movie is wasn’t a ‘heroes’ type of case, it was an American case and for Tony Stark it was fucking personal.

To hit on key notes quickly on main points of this film I did and didn’t like, they are as follows:

Likes

•  Robert Downey Jr. - Strong performance per usual, but even better with Pepper’s and Stark’s relationship. Still and probably always will be the best Iron Man ever.
• Gwyneth Paltrow - Best Potts performance to date and absolutely loved the scene with her kicking ass with the Extremis in her system. Would have stood up and applauded, but I didn’t want to be judged by the 12 yr old girl next to me.
• Guy Pearce - Hearing mixed reviews on Pearce and I am quite the Pearce fanboy, but I really thought his villain act was pretty menacing. The way he shredded through iron man suits and the fact that he was obviously the poster child for Extremis (was fucking breathing fire!) made him pretty cool to me.
• Visuals - Probably a little bit of a ‘duh’ here, but the Extremis ‘baddies’ and the final battle are definitely to note here.
• End Credits - Love the still shots from all three movies especially if this ends as a triology.

Dislikes

• Don Cheadle - Yes the scenes with him are much better this time, but since when did War Machine (or Iron Patriot in this movie) become this pussy of a sidekick? Also you’re still no Terrance Howard.

• Dr. Maya Hansen - I actually like Rebecca Hall in her first two scenes, but they didn’t include her enough in the story. When she was shot I really had no idea if I was supposed to feel for her or not.
• Extremis Story - I feel like there should have been more explanation to some of what Extremis was. Fans are complaining about this being a plot hole, but I can explain all their questions with a simple answer; each person responds differently to it. Still though I can’t put my finger on what more I would like even though I know I just do.
• After Credits Scene - Real quick. FUCK YOU MARVEL. A nice and easy hehe is fine for after the accomplishment that was The Avengers, but give me something to talk about after this one for fucks sake.

Again I understand you may still be a little pissed off that we still didn’t get The Mandarin, but I urge you to take a step back and look at this movie a bit more. You’ll find a very good comic book movie and the best Iron Man movie yet. You heard me pipsqueak…the best yet. As much as I would like to see The Mandarin as well, I think they did a great job here if it’s ending as a trilogy and left Tony in a good place.

Oh yes how could I forget my favorite line of the movie that my GF will now always hear, “You know what I’m wondering about? Where the hell is my sandwich.”

A sandbox game in nature and this pretty much sums it up:

It’s a free-play area where gamers can use their toys however they want. Like LittleBigPlanet, they can create their own levels and types of games, which include racers and platformers. They can mix characters from different films. It’s basically a virtual world where a younger generation can have their own adventures.

…The raw materials for building these play lands will come from Play Sets, which are essentially themed worlds that limit the playable figurines to those that are part of the universe. Players go through developer-designed missions in each world and earn new items to use in the toy box. If that weren’t enough, Disney plans on selling 20 power discs that contain enhanced environments, gadgets and more.

The big thing Disney is banking on here is earning a constant cash flow which is similar to DLC, but much more creative in my mind. Pretty much just watch the trailer below and start thinking about which characters you want to play with and what types of things you want to build. The western seems to be a dying breed. The most recent iterations I can think of that were any good would have to be the remake of Appaloosa or the remake of 3:10 to Yuma. And while those were fantastic films they were released in 2008 and 2007 respectively; and they were remakes. Thankfully Quentin Tarantino has come along and given us western fans a truly great film that is entertaining, smart, and original.

Django Unchained follows a slave named Django (Jamie Foxx) who is bought by Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) a German dentist turned bounty hunter. Schultz buys Django because he needs him to help identify the Brittle Brothers, his latest bounty. He offers Django a proposition, if he helps Schultz track down the Brittle Brothers, he will give Django his freedom. The two quickly bond and Django confides to Schultz that he has a wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), who is still a slave somewhere. Feeling responsible for Django, Schultz decides to aid him in his quest to free his wife. Their quest leads them to one Calvin Candy (Leonardo DiCaprio), the owner of Candyland, one of the largest plantations in the United States. Together Django and Schultz devise a plot to enter Candyland and save Broomhilda.

People are throwing the word masterpiece around this movie like they throw cigarette butts on the ground at a Depeche Mode concert, and rightly so. Quentin Tarantino has worked his magic yet again, coming off the success of the revisionist history flick Inglourious Basterds.

One of the first things you notice as Django Unchained begins, besides the brilliant cinematography and choice soundtrack, is the incredibly smart and witty script. By now it’s something we come to expect from a Tarantino picture, but it’s still a marvel that he’s able to deliver such fantastic work time after time. Whether it’s the hilarious and fun introduction to Waltz’s Schultz, or the inane conversation that goes on in a lynch mob about the eye holes in their white hood masks, the script never loses its sharp edge.

The script also does not shy away from the evils of slavery. It’s hard to watch some of the scenes in which the white owners berate their slaves; even in a fictional setting it’s unsettling. That being said Tarantino handles it well.

The cast is brilliant in this film too. Foxx’s performance is full of both swagger and subtlety, proving once again that he is more than just another movie star (see Ray and Collateral for further evidence). Waltz is also great as Schultz. The magnetic charisma he displayed as the evil Colonel Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds is on display here, only this time he’s playing the good guy and we love him for it.

Leonardo DiCaprio is also great as the charming and evil Calvin Candy. He is able to go from cool southern gent to raging tyrant in a second and back again. It’s as natural as watching ice melt. Samuel L. Jackson also turns in a great performance as the menacing house slave Stephen, intensely loyal to his white masters. His performance reminded me a lot of an angry Uncle Ruckus from The Boondocks. If you haven’t seen that show I suggest you pay more attention to Adult Swim.

Other standouts in the cast are the beautiful Kerry Washington and Don Johnson as Big Daddy, another plantation owner.

While the film is smart and well acted it is also a visual feast. Tarantino’s direction and Robert Richardson’s (JFK, Inglourious Basterds) cinematography come together to create a lot of beautiful and interesting shots. There are a lot of spaghetti western touches, though less of the Sergio Leone variety. I don’t think there was one eyeball showdown in the whole film. Either way, the film is a visual treat and another exercise in fine filmmaking.

It’s really no surprise that Quentin Tarantino has delivered yet another golden egg in Django Unchained. From the moment I saw the trailer I had no doubts as to whether this film would be a success or not. What makes it really satisfying to me is that it’s a fantastic western, and there just aren’t enough of those anymore. 5 out of 5 stars.

Five planets around the nearest star that match our sun’s luminosity has been discovered. Once again aliens looking pretty good this week. Maybe we discover the Stargate that leads to this planet with aliens that will enslave and destroy us huh?

• ‘Spider That Builds Its Own Spider Decoys Discovered‘ - Now I’m not scared of spiders, but I know plenty of people that are. Informing them that a new spider has been found that creates decoys that can move to lure in prey is probably enough for them to think the world is going to end. At least to start making plans to destroy Peru where the spider is found.
• Justin Bieber Girlfriend Perfume - Just found out this exists today. Seriously it’s called Justin Bieber Girlfriend. If a girl wears this, she’s too young for you bro.

The . . . → Read More: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Review (Spoilers)]]> Well fellow nerds, the last big nerd movie of 2012 is upon us. Peter Jackson and co’s return to the world of Middle-earth, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is now out in theaters. And while it’s not the best of the series, it is still a worthy entry into the Tolkien cinematic universe.

The film opens with a prologue narrated by old Bilbo (Ian Holm reprising his role in the original trilogy). In it he recounts how the evil dragon Smaug attacked the dwarf kingdom of Erebor inside the Lonely Mountain and claimed all of its treasure as his own. As a result the dwarves who lived there are displaced, becoming homeless nomads working wherever they can to make a living. We are also introduced to the human city of Dale, which is also ravaged by Smaug’s attack as it lies just outside the gates of Erebor. Dale will come into play more in the next two films I imagine as it is not talked about again.

As Bilbo finishes his prologue we get a chance to see he and Frodo (Elijah Wood) interact. It’s kind of a superfluous scene but it acts as connective tissue to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. We are then sent back 60 years to a younger Bilbo (Martin Freeman). As he sits outside his hobbit hole smoking his pipe, Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) turns up to say hello. Their interaction is straight out of the book and wonderfully enacted by Freeman and McKellen. Gandalf leaves Bilbo flustered with his roundabout way of talking, but not before printing a strange mark on the door of his hobbit hole. Later that night as Bilbo is about to eat his dinner, dwarf after dwarf after dwarf begins to show up at his door. Before he knows it, Bilbo is hosting a meeting for 13 dwarves and a wizard. What he doesn’t know is why, but he soon finds out.

The leader, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) explains the dwarves’ plan to take back Erebor from the dragon Smaug. He and Gandalf also inform Bilbo that they need him to be their burglar. Bilbo is none too thrilled at the prospect of risking life and limb to help the dwarves win back their treasure. Eventually however, Bilbo does join them as his adventurous “Tookish” side is able to win out over his conservative “Baggins” side.

After leaving the Shire we see our heroes brave trolls, orcs, and wargs, among other dangers. They are also hunted by a new character that does not appear in the book, an orc named Azog (Manu Bennett). He and Thorin have a treacherous history. There is also a stop in Rivendell where we see Elrond (Hugo Weaving), and Galadriel (Cate Blanchett). And of course, we get to see the fateful meeting between Bilbo and Gollum (Andy Serkis).

There is also a subplot involving Gandalf’s wizard colleague Radagast the Brown (Sylvester McCoy) who is investigating an evil presence known only as the Necromancer (Benedict Cumberbatch). That I assume will also be further explored in the next two films.

Jackson has once again put together a wonderful cast. Martin Freeman is the perfect Bilbo, not only does he look like a younger Ian Holm, but he’s also funny, interesting and relatable. He’s also heroic without it feeling forced or unearned. If you’ve seen him in the BBC’s Sherlock, you already know he’s a fantastic actor. It’s probably unnecessary to even mention how great McKellen is as he is always fantastic in anything he’s in, particularly as Gandalf. Richard Armitage is also a solid addition. I would still take Viggo any day, but Armitage plays the heroic would be king well.

There are so many dwarves that only a few really are given a chance to stand out. Balin (Ken Stott) and Dwalin (Graham McTavish) both get a few more lines than the others as do Fili (Dean O’Gorman) and Kili (Aiden Turner). They all do fine though.

Serkis is as wonderful as ever, making Gollum creepy, funny, awkward, unsettling, and, dare I say it, endearing at times. Sylvester McCoy’s Radagast is a bit of an old kook which works well. We don’t spend a lot of time with him but it’s plain to see he is a welcome addition as well.

Other notable cast members include Blanchett and Weaving, as well as the great Christopher Lee who reprises his role as Saruman the White. This is a big cast to be sure and overall they do a fantastic job bringing the characters of Tolkien’s universe to life.

The script by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro is also well done, considering it has so much to do. The pacing isn’t perfect but it’s not so bad that it’s not enjoyable. The film does starts out a bit slow and some of the scenes in the film feel forced, particularly the council between Gandalf, Galadriel, Elrond, and Saruman; but I think that in the end after all three movies it will work out. Jackson and co are in their element here, and if anything we should be giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Their script does include a lot of great elements from the book including a lot of the songs. I always thought it would be weird to include them but Jackson and his writing team has made it work. I also enjoyed Gandalf’s bit about Bilbo’s ancestor Bullroarer which is an entire paragraph lifted right out of the book.

The one major gripe I have with the film is an overuse of CG. There are times when I was taken out of the movie by a cheap looking warg or an orc that could have easily been an extra wearing makeup. The worst instance of this is the completely CG Azog. He’s meant to be a major villain with a grudge against Thorin but because he is CG and speaks only in orc he never feels very threatening. It’s a shame because Gollum turned out so well. They would have been much better off casting a bodybuilder and putting makeup on him.

As a whole The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a good film. The problem many people will have with it is that it’s not a great film. It doesn’t reach the heights that The Fellowship of the Ring did. The pacing is a bit wonky and the CG is overbearing. However, there is a lot of interesting stuff going on here story wise. I am very interested to see what other additions and story changes await us in the next two movies and I have complete confidence that Peter Jackson will pull it off. The performances are also fantastic and a lot of the CG does work. It’s also very faithful to the novel and that’s a good thing so far. We’ll just have to wait and see. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Granted I was hesitant at first because there’s a portal under the ocean where these creatures come from, but let’s be real people this is about monsters/aliens attacking Earth being countered by giants B.A. robots created by man. At this point who gives a shit where they came, GDT just fulfilled my wish of seeing a motion picture based on the ‘King of the Monsters’ video game. GDT is amazing at visual creations (IE Pan’s Labyrinth) and so far this looks great as well. Transform and roll out Transformers because Pacific Rim is about to own you. TORO! TORO!

Some people are already pissed just with this teaser trailer saying that there’s no substance, it’s all just action, and they pretty much want Kirk and Spock to make love in the trailer. I say slow your roll there nerds, just a teaser. JJ will have the substance, he may not explain everything you’d like (f!@#$% Lost), but he’ll put out something worth while. Also the rumors can be put to rest, Khan will definitely be the villain…hence my title, hehe.

One hundred years from now as the economic climate in America hits a critical decline, an elite city-state is erected by a consortium called Excorp in the foot-hills of the northern Rockies. Blackacre is “the mother of all gated communities” designed to keep the poor and disfranchised out. As America plummeted further into roaming hordes of barbarian tribes, the Blackacre community flourished. Auxiliary Captain Hull is a bred soldier of Blackacre, raised from childhood to defend the city, and finds himself after 12 years of service finally being taken off the wall that surrounds Blackacre. During his “retirement” celebration, Hull is confronted by one of the community’s leaders, Executor Terrance Sinclair. Sinclair informs Hull that in order to ensure the survival of Blackacre, a proactive approach towards developing space and resources is required. This is achieved by sending operatives into the outlying barbaric wastes of America and performing various scouting, sabotage and assassination missions to keep the poor masses disorganized. One such operative is Greene, an old comrade of Hull’s from the wall. Turns out Greene has gone missing in the wastes for over two weeks and Sinclair is enlisting Hull’s help to track him down and bring him home. Hull hops at the chance to save his friend; his ties to his fellow soldiers is something he holds dear above all else, even Blackacre itself. The issue ends with our hero gearing up to traverse the apocalyptic countryside in search for Greene. But what Hull is unaware of, which Sinclair narrates to us as readers, is that Greene seems to have gone rogue and Sinclair has attached an explosive to Hull’s tracking device to utilize our hero as a human bomb and kill Greene in the wastes.

Holy Shit! Big shadowy evil corporate government? Apocalyptic bandits and blood-feuding? Occult holy wars? Sign me up! Boudreau’s story is enthralling from start to finish, the above stated twist had me exclaiming allowed. And Cavalcanti’s artwork works great with the story. His pacing and framing of each panel carries a lot of weight to the overall experience. Only critique is that many of the faces seem a bit to similar, making it hard to differentiate characters at first. Blackacre is a title I highly recommend for all sci-fi loving, dystopian enthusing, and thrill ride seeking nerds out there. Pick it up before they’re all gone. Blackacre has already sold out at the distributor’s level!

Apparently it was the newly written script from Paul Horner and Etan Cohen that convinced Murray to do it along with the huge support from his fans. 2015 is going to be a big year for our spandex wearing heroes. The Avengers will have their much anticipated sequel and DC fans will finally have a live action Justice League film. Bought damn time! It all started with the Man of Steel set to hit theaters next year and WB stating that it will role out a film featuring all our favorites. Without a director yet picked, or even a set cast, rumors are already flourishing on the internet. And all signs point to Darkseid, the ruling god of Apokolips! And it makes perfect sense. All Justice League members are phenomenal heroes in their own right but will need a global threat to unite them under one banner. Darkseid, created by the legendary Jack Kirby in 1970, is generally depicted on a quest to find the Anti-Life Equation that will help him subjugate all free will from the universe. Hellbent on amassing power, he utilizes his Omega Sanction eye lasers to vaporize peons and enlists the services of Granny Goodness and her Furies. In the latest Justice League comic series, Darkseid is used by writer Geoff Jones as the unifying big bad to bring together our heroes. Darkseid has also shown up on Smallville as the final seasons antagonist, and in the direct to DVD feature Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. Both of which are excellent.

So if rumors hold true, what can we expect to see from Darkseid in 2015? Will the New Gods show up? Perhaps Barda as one of the furies? Or that clown of an anchor Godfrey perhaps. What does the nerdosphere hope to see, and who do you think will make a great Darkseid?

Oh hell yea! Spartacus’ right hand Gaul joins the cast of one of my favorite new shows. It was announced yesterday that Manu Bennett has signed on to portray Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke, later in this season of CW’s Arrow. Bennett is best known for his bulky muscles and stunt-cocking Xena on Starz hit series Spartacus as the gladiator/freedom-fighter Crixus. Bennett’s Slade will be featured in a handful of episodes in a series of flashbacks to Ollie’s time spent on the island Lian Yu. Apparently an alliance will form, but for how long? Deathstroke is a major baddy for GA in the comics and I’m definitely looking forward to a solid bad guy on the series instead of the “jerk of the week” scenarios they’ve been throwing at us. And Bennett is a bad ass, great match CW. What does the nerdosphere think?

Adding these actors can only help, so let’s hope this is just a sign of good things to come.

So… We all know that the world’s greatest super hero’s journey is coming to an end in issue #700, and issue #698 is the beginning of that end. Having survived not one but two Hobgoblins in the last story arc, we find Peter Parker web swinging through NY happy as a clam and looking to rekindle his love with Mary Jane. Why ever they parted is beyond me. Most of the issue seems like a throw away piece, filling gaps between arcs, but Slott drops the hammer in the final pages, ending with a HOLY FUCK! Spidey is summoned to Doc Oc’s deathbed to wish his nemesis bon voyage; turns out our good ol neighborhood Spider-Man is actually possessed with the mind of Doc Oc, and the Peter Parker as we knew him is trapped within the frail body of the doctor’s. A damn body swap straight out of a 80′s family comedy! Except there is no personal growth here, because the doc’s heart gives out taking our Peter’s mind with it.

WTF! How long has Doc Oc been inside of our web-head? And did Slott just kill off Peter Parker? Or will the wait staff resuscitate him? All I know is Slott said he was gonna fuck shit up and have to go into hiding… this looks like the makings to be so. Amazing Spider-Man is set to cancel publication with #700 and Marvel will release a new spider book “Superior Spider-Man”. Is this to be the new Doc Spider-Man turning a new leaf? Or will Miles Morales finally show up in the 616? Your thoughts and speculations are welcomed.

After years of being recycled on USA and other trash cable networks, MacGyver has been rejuvenated for today’s godless youth. Earlier this month it was announced that a MacGyver movie is in the works, which will understandably be epic. After all, this man has defused a missile with just a paper clip, fixed a truck with only the spring of a pen, and made mullets fashionable for far too many years. Written by Bangkok Dangerous‘ Jason Richman, this new feature will be directed by non other than James Wan of Insidious and the Saw franchise.

In addition to this film, Image Comics has released the first issue – which has sold out – of a 5 part mini-series last month that is written by the shows creator Lee David Zlotoff. This is Mac’s first adventure since 1994. MacGyver becomes involved in a twisted tale of corporate espionage, Interpol agents, and sexy femme fatales all the whilst evading assassins looking to collect a million dollar bounty on his head. Art is a little weak, but MacGyverisms a plenty!

I for one am re-growing my mullet in anticipation of this film. Who’s with me?

Totes excited about this story. Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pacific Rim) is in talks for doing an adaptation of Heaven Sent which includes characters such as Deadman, Constantine, Swamp Thing, The Spectre, Zatanna, ect. Pretty much the most supernatural characters from the DC Universe. To be honest though I don’t know anything about most these characters except for what I just now quickly looked up. To have Del Toro behind this film though is very exciting because I was a big fan of the Hellboy movies and an even bigger fan of Pan’s Labyrinth (crossing my fingers for Pacific Rim) and he seems like one of the only directors to get the right feel for this type of movie. Nothing is written in stone behind a contract for Del Toro, but it sounds like this is very much in the works.

Nick Sax is an ex-cop turned hired gun in writer Grant Morrison’s latest Happy!- a four issue mini series released by Image Comics. Its a Christmas story laden with money, sex, booze and eczema. Issue #1 laid out for us a pedder-ass Santa Claus who is collecting and rape-killing children, while our “hero” is being hunted down by the mob. Oh yea, and there is a flying blue cartoon horse named Happy. Turns out Happy is the imaginary friend of one kidnapped Hailey and has embarked on a mission to save her by enlisting the help of the only other person in the world who can see him, Nick. Issue #2 opens with Happy saving Nick’s ass by giving him directions and tips on how to escape the mob hospital he is currently residing in after the events of Issue #1. After series of exceptional panels of stabbings and bloody bludgeons by artist Darick Robertson, Nick and Happy escape and find themselves in a poker game. What follows is every poker players dream of rigged gaming hijinx- followed by Nick killing everyone in the room with a pen. But our unlikely hero is still unwilling to help Happy save Hailey and heads to the train station to skip town and save his own ass. Hailey only has a few hours left to live.

Morrison’s writing is quite exceptional in this issue, with many memorable and vulgar lines I’m sure will catch on with the kiddies. Robertson’s art really delivers, seamlessly blending the ultra violent world of Nick Sax with his small and blue animated friend flying every which way. Happy! is by far the best work Morrison has put out as of late, though to be honest his Action Comics run is atrocious and thankfully coming to an end in the new year. What has the nerdosphere thought of this series so far? How does reading indie titles compare to their mainstream counterparts for you?

Are you not just happy after watching this trailer? Makes my day better I can tell you that much. Grand Theft Auto is definitely in my top 5 gaming franchises of all time and this installment doesn’t look like it’s going to disappoint. We get a look at all three playable characters here and they all look pretty great and definitely diverse. This is a first for the series, so we’ll see how they handle it. If you know Rockstar and these games though, then you know it will deliver. The game itself looks amazing, (even though the whole trailer is in-game cut scenes) the scale and look of the city and surrounding area looks great, and it looks like all planes, trains, and automobiles (among others) are in full force here. A lot of people like to complain about sequels; that they’re soulless money grabs (often true), or that Hollywood is out of ideas (somewhat true), or that there is no reason for them to happen (completely untrue). I celebrate sequels. A well done sequel to a movie you love is a boon because it means you get to spend some more time with your favorite characters or experience more of a fun world or place. Without sequels we wouldn’t have The Godfather Part II, Spider-Man 2, Aliens, The Dark Knight, or The Empire Strikes Back. Skyfall, the 23rd Bond film, is such a movie. A sequel that doesn’t suck. A sequel that improves upon its predecessors the way those I mentioned above have.

Casino Royale was a fantastic Bond movie, reinventing 007 for modern audiences and keeping him away from the camp and pomp that the Brosnan movies were heading toward. And while Quantum of Solace was a sore misstep there were reasons for its problems. The Writers Guild strike cut short script writing time and the director Marc Forster was a weak choice to replace Martin Campbell. It was a disappointing failure especially since the film was trying to wrap up the Vesper thread and continue Bond’s investigation of the shadowy organization she was being manipulated by.

Thankfully long time producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli righted the series by hiring John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator) to work on Neil Purvis and Robert Wade’s script for Skyfall. They also hired the very talented Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead) to direct. The result is possibly the best Bond film ever.

In Skyfall we find 007 (Daniel Craig) attempting to recover a stolen hard drive that contains the names of every undercover MI6 agent in every terrorist organization in the world. His attempts to recover the drive lead him on a thrilling chase sequence that starts on the streets of Istanbul and ends on the top of a train. Bond is just about to recover the drive from the man who stole it when M (Dame Judi Dench) orders fellow MI6 agent Eve (Pirates of the Caribbean’s Naomi Harris) to shoot him. She misses and hits Bond, sending him over a bridge and into a river.

One trippy opening credits sequence later and Bond has been pronounced dead. We find him hiding out under the radar, unwilling to return to MI6 after M had ordered the shot to be taken. But when a mysterious villain attacks MI6, Bond must return to help track him down and prevent him from releasing the names on the hard drive. Along the way Bond will have to deal with the very real threats of age and obsolescence while trying to stop a madman from M’s past.

Nearly everything about this movie is superb and it all starts with the star of the show, Daniel Craig. He continues giving a multifaceted performance as Bond, hitting all the necessary notes. He’s great at the confidence, the lady killing, the physicality, but what really sets him apart from other actors who’ve played the role is the humanity that he brings to it. As I just said, this Bond has to deal with age and the possibility of obsolescence in the face of technology. He doesn’t just shrug the gunshot wound off, it stays with him and Craig does an excellent job of communicating that throughout the film. He’s also endlessly cool in a way that no one else can duplicate. It’s really quite remarkable.

Judi Dench is, as usual, a standout as well. She gets an expanded role this time as much of the film is about her past and her mistakes. She and Craig share a lot of great scenes together, building the relationship that was established so well in Casino Royale. Not only are they funny together but there’s a real sense that they care about each other even if Bond is a loose cannon at times and M isn’t as careful at preserving the lives of her agents as she should be. It’s a rocky road for both of them in this film.

Javier Bardem plays the villain of the piece, the Joker-like Silva. From his fantastic entrance to his creepy and effeminate performance, everything about him screams classic Bond villain. He also has a great back story to give him motivation and a gnarly “scar” to show for it. Adding this to his No Country for Old Men role proves that he is one of the best at playing the villain.

Bérénice Marlohe turns in a solid performance as the gorgeous and tortured Sévérine, sharing a particularly memorable scene at a bar with Craig. Naomi Harris is fine as Bond’s partner Eve and flirty love interest. Ralph Fiennes plays a stuffy government official who used to work as an agent and Albert Finney also shows up towards the end as an old friend of Bond’s. The other great performance is newcomer Ben Whishaw’s who plays the new Q. He and Craig have instant chemistry, echoing the classic banter between Sean Connery and Desmond Llewelyn.

The soundtrack by Thomas Newman (Little Children, Finding Nemo) is also epic. It’s sweeping and varied, employing everything from little electronic spy movie cues to big sumptuous strings while throwing in little snippets of the Bond theme. It all further adds to the depth and scope of the film.

The cinematography by Roger Deakins (No Country for Old Men, A Serious Man) is superb. This is without a doubt the best looking Bond ever. Whether it’s the stunning Scottish countryside, a silhouetted skyscraper fight, or a classy Asian casino, Deakins’s work is absolutely brilliant here. Oscar worthy in fact.

Speaking of Oscars, if there ever was a Bond film that deserved such honor, this is it. The story is smart, the themes are relevant, and the entire production feels so tight and so pro that it’s hard to not think about it. In all likelihood the Academy will overlook it and it might be nominated for categories like Cinematography and Sound Design, but it certainly deserves nods for Best Picture and Best Director. Director Sam Mendes’s talented eye creates many unique and memorable shots and sequences whether they are action scenes or intimate conversations.

Skyfall proves that sequels don’t have to be tasteless money grabs or that Hollywood is out of ideas. The worst part is that I knew this was coming and still couldn’t handle it. I knew they were going to have one main protagonist (Pitt) and follow him around as he saves the day. WRONG. WRONG. WRONG. Why on earth do you need to change how the story was written? Cause you want a big name actor? Granted this novel could have been a great TV series (maybe just a mini series), but a film adaptation is not impossible. No wonder this film has taken so long to get made; everyone is questioning the shit that’s being put on film. Do the Angry Birds need a coffee break because angry Guy Davis needs to break some more stuff.

I never thought I’d continue to see these movies, but since James pretty much makes us and Cage is now in it I have to no matter what. Sly said this recently on his Facebook page:

Hopefully we can realize to Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes and Mickey Rourke. That is the great mission of the producer. Throw in some bees, a bear costume, and maybe some more flaming skulls and Nic Cage is right in his wheelhouse. Don’t think those things are out of the question. These movies don’t give a sh!t.
