NASA’s Building a Tractor Beam. Shooooo… Sucked Me Right In

Now that NASA no longer has the Shuttle program, it is back to its greatest and most urgent mission: making the technology of Star Wars a reality.  Tractor beams are next on the list and NASA is wasting no time. It has rewarded $100,000 to the Goddard Space Flight Center to test three possible ways of collecting samples without touching them. Unfortunately, NASA is not attempting to grab spaceships but is focusing on moving dust and cells.  The devices would most likely be placed on probes and satellites to collect samples of extraterrestrial atmospheres and comet tails. The possible “tractor beams” include, “optical tweezers” using two lasers, solenoid beams creating electromagnetic effects and Bessel beams creating electrical and magnetic fields.
