Haven’t We Been Here Before?

You know what insanity is? Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I downloaded the Nightwing DLC for Arkham Asylum. It was fun to use a different character, but considering how poorly and unflushed things were, it was definitely NOT worth the 560 MS points. He didn’t even have his own voice for fuck’s sake.

One week ago, Robin got his own DLC. And like an Alzheimer’s patient, I came back, paid my 5 or 6 real world dollars to play with a new skin. And once again, although I appreciate the diversity of characters in the challenge and campaign maps, I wanted a deeper experience. And again, there is no voice for the new character. And there is NO excuse. Tim Drake spoke in the game, so you had already set aside a voice actor. Just polish it a bit.

And this comes to one of the biggest hot button issues with modern gaming; the DLC. This is an example of the worst kind; it’s over-priced for the amount of content you receive, the additional achievements aren’t a significant challenge if you have already mastered the core gameplay, and it comes way too soon after the release of the game. Considering they both came out within 4 weeks of the game, these – as well as others… we’re looking at you Halo – these could have easily been packaged with the rest of the game. Just wait a week or two (we’ve already waited 8 months, what’s another two weeks?) and then release. It’s not that fucking hard.

In other gaming news, even though some games are great at pumping out downloadable content , Left 4 Dead 2 has postponed the release of Cold Stream for consoles yet again. With an original release date set for before Sept 21, then Oct 31, then Nov 22, it’s safe to say they are running a little behind schedule. When asked about the tardiness of the highly anticipated release, Valve stated you’ll get it when you get it bitch, neener neener eat a dick, or the professional equivalent thereof.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is out… and please don’t get it. The original came literally came out earlier this year; most people barely have all the trophies and achievements. The new characters they are adding are practically a joke (Rocky Raccoon?), advertising “audience mode” so you can watch others play should have been a part of the regular game, and putting in new stages is irrelevant. We need to send a message that we aren’t going to succumb to cheap excuses for games. If we buy crap, they will keep making crap.

Finally, the holiday season is looking kind of sparse for the great releases. Bioshock Infinity and Halo 4 are both scheduled for 12/31, Diablo 3 and Mass Effect 3 are both postponed into early 2012. Guess St. Patty’s Day will be ruined instead of Dr. King’s Birthday.

On a personal note; I call to the nerdosphere with opportunity. Got a little bit of free time? Want to talk to kinsmen all over the country about comic books and get recognition and gratitude in return? Then allow me to provide you a venue; www.theouthousers.com. The editor is asking for a new base of writers, and I could think of none better than you. Feel free to message me if interested.
